what is rumored to work, is calling tracfones (terrible) customer service and paying for a year in advance...

You have to either have a year of service and then they'll unlock it for free AFTER the year is over, or you can pay them $150 straight up.
NoTech Where do you see that you can pay them $150? Can you post a link here?

SamFried If you willing to pay that price then you get the VN220 or UN220 (much better phone then the classic) for a lot cheaper.

NoTech Do you see that anywhere on their website? The agent may have given you inaccurate information.

Seems like it may not be official policy but some agents will do it for you.
Note that most of the tracfone agents are wholly inadequately inadequate at even basic tasks.
